Enfermera británica nacida en Italia, fundadora de la enfermería profesional. Como enfermera voluntaria, tuvo a su cargo la atención de enfermería de los militares en Turquía, durante la guerra de Crimea. Su primera preocupación fue el saneamiento: los cuarteles de los pacientes estaban infestados de ratas y pulgas, y la ración de agua era de medio litro diario por persona para todas las necesidades. Solventó de su peculio la compra de suministros. También pasó muchas horas en las salas de hospitalizados; sus visitas nocturnas atendiendo personalmente a los heridos le valieron la imagen de "La dama de la lámpara. Sus esfuerzos por mejorar el bienestar de los soldados promovieron la creación de la escuela de medicina del ejército y de un departamento sanitario en India. Inauguró la primera escuela de enfermería de base científica, fue un elemento clave en introducir la capacitación de enfermeras y parteras en las enfermerías de los asilos y colaboró en reformar estos últimos. Fue la primera mujer galardonada con la orden al mérito (1907).
